Gregory Industries, a large manufacturer of highway guard rails with continuous galvanizing capabilities, recently contracted with the Formtek's B&K Coil Metal Processing group to design and manufacture a replacement Turret Recoiler and Turret Uncoiler. The new machines were designed to increase the coil capacity, reduce downtime, and increase the throughput of the continuous strip galvanizing line.

Both units required special mountings in order to match the existing equipment and foundations to reduce installation and start-up time. The machines were successfully installed in May of this year.

The new coilers contained hydraulic rotation on large ring bearings with hydraulic detents, inching drives, holddowns and 20” diameter mandrels. Turret Coilers are ideal for continuous process lines, high production slitting lines or any coil feed process equipment that requires fast coil changes. Standard and custom coilers are available in sizes from 5,000 pounds x 12” wide to 80,000 pounds x 84” wide.

The honor is awarded annually to any person, who, in the opinion of the FMA Board of Directors, has rendered exceptional and outstanding service to the interests and development of metal forming and fabrication technology.

"I was surprised, thrilled and honored to be nominated for the award especially since I believe so strongly in FMA and what they do to promote our industry," said Don, who has over 40 years experience related to the Roll Formting, Tubing and Stamping Die Industries as a tool and diemaker, tool engineer/designer, service technician, estimator and sales engineer.

"There is a reason why people give forth their time and effort to an organization," Don explained. "For me it is because I believe in our industry and the association that support us."

Hill Engineering, founded in 1950 by Don's father, Reese, is one of the industry's leading tool and die innovators. As part of Formtek, Hill Engineering is united with a strong group of proven industry names that specialize in building machinery and systems for the stamping, roll forming and fabrication industries.
